Sony NGP

Sony Playstation NGP

“Designed to blur the lines between interactive entertainment and reality, the NGP will offer Wi-Fi and 3G network connectivity. The 5-inch OLED front multi-touch display will bring brilliant images to life and the multi-touch pad on the rear will allow users to engage with the game and characters with a simple movement of their fingertips.”

Most interesting is the announcement of Playstation Suite, a new service based on the Android operating system, which will be working on Playstation Suite compatible devices and on the NGP.

“Also announced this evening was PlayStation Suite, an entirely new initiative from PlayStation that will provide fans with the opportunity to enjoy PlayStation content on an open operating system for the first time in PlayStation history. PlayStation Suite will work with Android based, “PlayStation Certified” portable devices – including mobile phones, smart-phones, and tablet PCs – to offer “PlayStation quality” content to users worldwide. In addition to providing a selection of PS one Classics, we are also working with developers to create new and exciting content that will be available on both PlayStation Certified devices and the new NGP when it comes to market”

Blackberry Empathy Concept

empathy3

empathy5

empathy4

The Empathy model for Blackberry pairs with a biometrics ring which will translate emothional data to the crystal like phone. The Empathy concept was designed by Kiki Tang and Daniel Yoon for a RIM sponsored project at the Art Center College of Design. One of the designers describes the interface as follows:

“It is of course touch based and all the user’s connections are shown graphically so you can see who is connected to whom. Each contact has an avatar that is encompassed by two colored rings. The inner colored ring shows the contact’s previous emotional state, and the outer ring represents the contact’s current emotional state. It is important to show the shift in emotions in order to see how an event has affected that contact.

Another important feature that we felt was important was the “Emotional Health Chart”. This chart would monitor the user’s emotional health through an indefinite period of time. One would be able to see how a certain event, or phone call/ message has affected the user. Obviously, if the chart shows someone is always upset, there would be a problem… If permitted, a user would be able to view other user’s charts as well.”

Optical Camouflage (Invisible Cloak)

Crazy!

One of the labs in the University of Tokyo uploaded some interesting videos several years ago on a new technology that involves neither chroma-keying nor photoshopping but is “quasi-invisivility” using a specific fabric and projector.

Shout out to my man Eric Sim and his Facebook update stream.

New Yorker iPad App

Generally I find Jason Shwartzman a bit annoying and mildly humorous at best – but this commercial is pure genius and I downloaded the app before the video actually finished.

IDEO Introduces Nelson, Coupland and Alice: The Future of the Book

The Future of the Book. from IDEO on Vimeo.

Maybe it’s inevitable, and perhaps I’m just slow to follow suit, but I just like the authentic feel of what will soon become a “vintange” hardcover novel. The last few years have really brought into question the future of books. As the tipping point has been reached with the likes of Amazon posting record sales under digital formats, the next evolution in book consumption comes into question. The innovative minds over at IDEO propose three new concepts for “tomorrow’s book”. Nelson, Coupland and Alice each represent a different approach to how we can better interact, consume and learn from the re-development of the book format.
