The Streets Top 10
After being disgusted beyond belief at MTV’s (The same network that brough you Hammer <— ahahaha) attempt at a Top 10 I’ve taken it upon myself to write my own top 10. Unlike MTV, who judged their top 10 by “straight-up skills, success (both musical and entrepreneurial), impact on the game and — new to our decision-making — swagger: an MC’s cool factor and how they carry themselves on and off recordings” I will be making my decisions based on one thing. Who can fucking rap! Isn’t that what this shit is about? I don’t give a fuck about no artists “swagger” (whatever the fuck that is) or their success (ie. how much money was in the marketing budget). Soooooo… without further delay, heres my list of MCs that put it down this year in the booth, on wax and in the mixtape circuit heavy:
NOTE: If you don’t like my list you can go fuck yerself! j/k but I like hip-hop gully and raw… like how it used to be… like how it was when I grew up… If you don’t like the real gully shit… you prob. won’t like this list. bashing is however encouraged and I’ll b curious to hear all yalls top MC’s this year.
10. Kardinal Offishall (If ya dun know check the Do the Right Thing Mixtape here, you will hear this T-DOT MC spit hotter verses than I heard on just about every rap CD that dropped this year. No shit, yall rollin ya eyes, go check the mixtape back 2 front and try to tell me this dude ain’t hotter than Jim Jones.)
9. Joell Ortiz (The dude is on the comeup hard, soundin hungry and bringin some REAL hip-hop to the table. Plus Dre just signed him to the Aftermath crew… I just hope he don’t go anywhere near G-Unit’s sinking ship)
8. Crooked I (I know a lot of mutherfuckers are looking at their screens in confusion right now… just check out his hip-hop weekly freestyles if you don’t know… I think he on his 12th week now or something… KILLIN IT def reppin the west harder than anyone else right now and providing dope hip-hop weekly.)
7. Styles P (Listen… naw listen! If yall didn’t cop the Ghost Sessions yer jerkin yaselves. He dropped sum CLASSIC material on a MIXTAPE! Not to mention he BEEN puttin it in, the last CD Time Is Money had some beautiful street shit on it too.)
6. T.I. (Despite dropping what I believe to be his worst album yet [and don't say shit too me if you never heard I'm Serious or Trap Muzik] the tracks that were dope on that album ie. Act I, Hurt, Help Is Coming continued to proved that T.I. can rap like a mutherfucker. His flow and prowess on the mic are on some other shit…
5. Lil Wayne (EVERYONE knows Wayne has had a very hot year. Hes been featured so many remixes, done so many features, released so many mixtapes BUT if you ask me Wayne’s “drought” suffocated me with his repetitive content. He raps like a fuckin monster but if theres no substance in those words what is he really saying??? Maybe I’ll put him higher next year when I hear this supposed Kanye assisted Classic thats on the way.)
4. Common (A lot of people been baggin Commons latest album… can’t say I disagree entirely BUT if I hadn’t already heard Misunderstood, Black Maybe, The People and The Game b4 the album dropped I would prob. have thought it was pretty genious. Nevertheless Com was in the public eye a lot this year and was always droppin gems and repping real truthful hip-hop music so he deserves his daps)
3. Brother Ali (Prob. catchin some more screwface out there but thats just cause yall been listenin to trash all year. This dudes last album isn’t even my fav (Check Shadows of the Sun for a primer if you new) but it still warrants a very high placement. As far as diversity of content, honesty, consciousness mixed with strong strong mic prowess Brother Ali delivers REAL fuckin music.)
2. Sean Price (Oh I’mma catch some hate for this one but honestly all I been bumpin alll year is that Jesus Price… I don’t even like half the beats but Sean still makes em gully… MASTER P mixtape is bananaz… if you came up on Heltah Skeltah and BCC family you gotta appreciate Sean P. Still comin with that Punch you in the Mouth flow I know the content ain’t all that varied BUT at least when he tells you he’ll smack earth, wind and fire out ya ass you know he ain’t fuckin lying (like some of these 120 lbs rappers hint hint)). Plus he released several CLASSIC freestyle videos I had on repeat.
1. Jay Electronica (Oh you didn’t know I’m a fucking Jay Electronica teeny bopper? Now a lot of mutherfuckers are looking at the screen in confusion again but let me remind you this is about RAPPING. If you haven’t listened to Act 1 (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind), and I mean LISTENED to it… absorbed that shit… then you can’t say a fucking thing to me and I know I’m right. This is by far the most compelling, interesting, far out but still cohesive and coherent peice of rap music of the year. His flow is basically quadrapeligic retarded, his content is on point, his delivery and prowess are god like. You can all mark my words that IF you really like hip-hop you WILL be listening to this dude in the next 5 years a lot. Thats my last word on the Jay discussion… but if you don’t listen to the shit your a fucking idiot!)
Thats my list… let the hating begin.
